Round-up of our work to tackle ASB this week

From addressing drug use to conducting a knife sweep, we have been busy responding to community concerns about anti-social behaviour (ASB).

Over the past week, we have:

Disposed of alcohol and moved people on who were drinking in Occupation Park in Millfield, and Stanley Recreation Ground near the city centre. Both of these areas are covered by a Public Spaces Protection Order (PSPO), which bans people from having open vessels of alcohol in the area. We will confiscate any alcohol we see and repeat offenders may face further action. After dispersing a group of people from Stanley Recreation Ground, we noticed that a syringe was left behind on the grass, which has been safely disposed of before it could cause any harm to those enjoying the area.

During our patrols of the city centre, we have spoken to a number of businesses about any concerns they may have. It was great to hear positive feedback from them about the work we have been doing and the impact it has had on them. While on these patrols, we moved on a couple of large groups of young people who had gathered in Queensgate shopping centre and were causing a nuisance.

We carried out a knife sweep in Bishop’s Road Gardens in the city centre. While no weapons were found on this occasion, we did clear up some smashed glass and have reported some graffiti on the statues to the council.

After complaints were raised to us, we spoke to a man in Cathedral Square who was flying a drone and gave him some words of advice. We also helped calm a situation down between two women who were arguing in the Queensgate bus station.

Following community concerns for a rough sleeper in North Bank Road, Eastfield, we visited the area to talk to the woman and check on her welfare, however she wasn’t there so we will pass information on to the council’s outreach team who will be able to provide her with support should she need it. Concerns for rough sleepers can be reported to the outreach team via the council’s website.

We spent some time in Norburn, Bretton, after being made aware of reports about drug dealing. No issues were identified during our patrols but we will aim to be in the area more to address the issue. If you have any information about drug use or dealing, you can report it via our dedicated webpage. We did however come across a house which appeared to have been collecting trolleys from Sainsbury’s, and encouraged the occupants to return them as soon as they could.

If you have any ASB concerns, you can report them to us online
